I didn’t start investing with a pile of cash. No inheritance, no bonus check, no dramatic “I finally have my life together” moment.I started with pocket change, at the lowest point in my life.I invested a few dollars here and there that I’d earned from playing mobile games and about 30-50¢ cents a month from book royalties. Basically, money I could have ignored or spent on piddly little things. Instead, I decided to do something different: I invested it.I ELI5-ed micro-investing and turned “I can’t afford to invest” into “I’m already investing.” Fractional shares, dividend funds – boring-but-steady things that don’t care how small your starting point is. And honestly? It’s kind of fun to watch those tiny contributions slowly grow (in equally tiny increments). The time is going to pass anyway, why not get paid for it?The best part is how much it changes my mindset. When the stakes are small, you can learn without panicking. I can experiment, make mistakes, and figure out how investing works – all without risking the rent money (or whatever equivalent that may be in your life). That little fifty-cent royalty? It’s now a fraction of a share earning dividends. I mean, how cool is that?I’m not going to get rich overnight. I’m not going to get rich at all. That’s not the point. The point is consistency, momentum, and proving to oneself that money doesn’t only flow out. It can stay, grow, and even do some work for you.So yeah, tiny money can build something real. And watching it happen feels surprisingly empowering. If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” or the “right amount” to start investing, take this as your permission slip: start small, with whatever you’ve got even if it’s pocket change, and research some stable stocks/ETFs to learn from. The rest is just math – and patience.
